Ladybirds is a league for women golfers in Brunswick County. It's been in existence for 24 years, and Oak Island was a charter member. There are 12 clubs included this year from Brunswick County. They include: Brick Landing, Carolina National, Carolina Shores, Crow Creek, Lockwood Folly, Magnolia Greens, Meadowlands/Farmstead, Oak Island, Rivers Edge, Sea Trail, St. James, and The Lakes. Each year, every club hosts a tournament which is played from March thru October. To be eligible to play in the tournament, a player must have a maximum index of 40 and be a member of her ladies' golf association. Sign-up sheets are posted in the locker rooms three (3) weeks before each tournament. Each club is allotted eleven (11) players, but alternates are encouraged to sign up for extra spots in the tournament in case there is still room for others to participate. Cancellation must be done 48 hours in advance or you do not receive a refund. Prizes (a sleeve of balls) are given in each flight according to low gross, second low gross, low net, second low net and lowest putts. There's a maximum of 10 strokes within each flight. At the end of the season, the final tournament, "The Cup", is played at the Ladybirds host club. In "The Cup", only eight (8) players represent their club.
To qualify to play in "The Cup" and to attend the luncheon, a player must have played in a minimum of two (2) tournaments. End of year prizes are awarded at the luncheon.
A good attempt was made for "The Cup" by our Oak Island Women, but we came in 4th with Sea Trails as the 2018 winners!!!
As the saying goes...NEXT YEAR!!
This was a team effort, with 8 women from each club participating. Each woman had to play at least twice in a Ladybird event to compete. Carolina National won the total net stroke, at 457. Our total net was 470, giving us second place of 10 teams. We had some great individual scores including personal second best ever 95 from Carolyn Kascher. GOOD JOB OIWGA!
Next year the cup is ours!!! (last time OIWGA owned the Ladybird Cup was 2002!)
A total of 98 golfers enjoyed a rain free opening Ladybirds season on Wednesday, March 27th at our beautiful course. We had many golfers from Oak Island with 50% of them taking home a winner's sleeve of balls. Great Job!!
